Detail from Death and the Miser by Hans Holbein the Younger

Spend money on a book about investing, written by a rich white man in his early thirties. When that doesn’t work, buy the sequel and subsequent audio courses. Then move on to the very pricey seminars and retreats. Even walk on hot coals, for some reason. Feel bad about yourself because the giant inside you keeps hitting the snooze button.

Spend money on a productivity app for your phone, and then buy even more expensive versions for your iPad and your laptop to ensure they stay in sync. Tell yourself that by spending this money, you are making a commitment, an investment in your way-more-productive future self. Stop using the app after three months because it’s too complicated or because it doesn’t fit into your exact process or because it’s too much maintenance and you’re a lazy f•••. Come across a flashier-looking app on ProductHunt that everyone seems to be excited about. Repeat.

Spend money on a Patreon pro-membership and then calculate that you’ll need much much much more than four subscribers to even reach the poverty line. Panic when you think about how much more time you’ll need to spend creating extra extra content to share with this quartet. Feel guilty after a three-month drought and give all of them a full refund.

Spend money on an email course from a popular Medium writer all about how to build up an email…
